My Students

How can you fix something if you don't know anything is wrong? How can you try to improve when you don't have best resources to do so?

Like most children, my students are very inquisitive.

They are curious about what's happening around them. My school has tried to become a place where we foster that curiosity and let the students know it's okay to wonder about things. We want them to know they should be willing to participate in dialogs about what they think and why, and try to see someone else's point of view. We try to bring in resources to feed their inquisitive natures; however, being that New York state is having trouble financially keeping teachers in the classroom, it gets more and more difficult with each passing year to bring in good resources for them, both resources to keep them informed, and ones to push their thinking.

My Project

My students need a class computer to check on their grades, missing work, and do extension and remedial activities. Having a classroom netbook would provide multiple opportunities for my students. An Acer Aspire One netbook is the perfect tool for them. It is small enough that it will be easy for me to transport from one classroom to the next as we teachers are the ones that move in my school, not the students. This way all the students I teach can benefit from it. It also provides access to what my students need. My school uses an online gradebook that provides progress reports, missing work reports, links to worksheets, etc. My students like to see how they are doing, yet it can be hard for them to do this at home. We are required to do daily conferencing with small groups. This is a great time for some of the other students to get on a computer to practice enrichment and remedial skills. I want my class to reach all students at the levels they are currently on. That is the best way to help them improve their skills to eventually be on the correct reading and writing levels.

Schools need technology for student success in today's world.

My students need opportunities to see how they are doing and know what they need to do to pull up their grades, or else they will not do it. They need to have access to the vast resources on the Internet in order to constantly push themselves to improve their academic abilities and to understand how much they can accomplish. A classroom netbook could help show my students their great potential, and what they have to do to reach it.
