Mrs. Andrecovich from Detroit MI is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a way to get some much needed exercise in during their school day especially those students who are extremely restless because of their autism.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The students in our post secondary school are all cognitively impaired. The students range in age from 18-26 where they are preparing for to learn life skills in several different areas. I teach laundry life skills to students on the Autistic Spectrum. Students work on skills such as sorting clothes, matching socks, folding and organizing clothes on labeled shelves. Students are also learning to wash, dry and iron clothes to the best of their abilities. Hopefully, some students will be able to learn skills enabling them to do their own laundry (some with assistance) and become proficient and comfortable doing laundry in order to become as independent as possible.
98% of our students are African American and come from a high poverty home environment.
Our school environment provides breakfast and lunch to our students giving them two nutritious meals during the school day. Unfortunately, when the school day ends many students are confined to their homes for their evening and don't always eat nutritious food and no exercise. Our students do not have a gym at our school and lack the opportunity to exercise on a daily basis.
We need some exercise equipment to help our students get healthy!
The Bikes in Stride will provide gross motor skills for our cognitively impaired students enabling them to release some built up energy while waiting for a load of clothes to finish in the washing machine. After students complete laundry life skill tasks they will be able to take turns turning the bike pedals while sitting in their chair and under the supervision of the teacher and paraprofessional. This will allow me to work with other students on various laundry skills while specific students get some much needed exercise.
The donations from this project will help to reduce behavioral problems in the classroom while helping students get healthy.
Healthy students with less behavioral problems will enable us to have a more productive school year for teachers and students.
