Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school has a big, beautiful (but currently unused) garden area which also happens to be the peaceful setting of my classroom. My students absolutely love it when I let them go outside to work on assignments or to play and explore, and they are always asking me when they can start planting flowers and vegetables in our garden. They have so many creative ideas, including a community pumpkin patch in the fall, and monthly farmers markets!

As luck would have it, we are starting several new elective classes, horticulture will be one of them, and I am blessed to have been invited to teach it.

As a science/health teacher, I am excited to be able to provide my students with opportunities to try new foods and explore healthier options. In addition, working in a garden will allow for developing communication skills through team building. Planting and tending to a garden, then watching it grow, gives kids a feeling of responsibility and accomplishment.
