Help me give my students access to amazing graphic novels to reignite the joy of reading through texts like The Crossover, I Am Alfonso Jones, and The Breakaways!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each year I teach 180 students within Baltimore City Public Schools. Our resources are limited but our students deserving. The school I teach at has a high number of low income and even impoverished students. But that does not provide accurate insight into who my students are. They are witty, intelligent, energized young adults who thrive with supports in place.
The purpose of my project is to provide access to more graphic novels.
Graphic novels are becoming popular among my students and they are helping once reluctant readers find joy in reading. Our graphic library collection is small and it is hard to keep up with the student demand. Thus, I would like to add a few more diverse titles to the library.
My Project
These materials will give more diverse access to reading. Many students cite that they do not enjoy reading. Graphic novels are a low risk, high engagement way to allow students to rediscover a great text! Many students are reading graphic novels on a daily basis.
Most of these titles are specific student requests.
The classroom library cannot keep up with the requests for graphic novels, and thus I am seeking support to bring more in. With these additional books, students can keep reading, growing their vocabulary, and developing their imaginations all through words. Many of these titles are specific student requests. I am developing amazing and self-confident reader leaders!
