This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a diverse population of 5th and 6th graders. Our school is a Title I school with most of our students being classified as socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Despite the obstacles that I have seen my students go through this year and in the past, I am inspired by their resiliency.

My ELD students especially have taught me the power of a growth mindset and the challenges and successes that come with learning a new language. I plan to use the materials acquired through this project to provide more relevant reading materials for my ELD students.

My Project

Research has shown that ELD students are able to improve literacy rates, as well as comprehension and meaning making through the use of graphic novels in a novel study.

In Raina Telgemeier's graphic novel "Ghosts," my ELD students will be practicing the essential standards, as well as literacy skills, through this multicultural novel.

Students are able to make meaning when the books they read are a mirror of their lives. "Ghosts" is a novel that includes aspects of Spanish, as well as English, allowing my students to connect to the deeper themes of the story. This graphic novel is not only relevant but can be used as a ​mirror for all my ELD students.
