Together with another class of 5th and 6th graders in our district, my students are analyzing representational trends in literature. We have come the the conclusion that the main characters represented in the books found in our school library do not match the racial, cultural, and social background represented by the students in our school. We feel that it is important for children to be able to see themselves mirrored in the characters they read about. As such, our students have collected data of the groups which are, and are not equitably represented in our libraries, and have compared that with the demographics of our schools. The books found on this list are a compilation of titles found by our classes to help create a school library that allows all students to see themselves in literature, while simultaneously giving a window into other lives. To take this idea a step farther, our students have interviewed a buddy from a first grade class. After getting to know their "buddy," they have written and illustrated their own picture books with characters that mirror their first grader. With your help we will be able to print a copy of these books for the first graders to take home, and a copy to shelve in our school library to be enjoyed by other children for years to come.
