I teach in a sixth grade inclusion classroom with 18 students, 10 of which have diverse learning needs. This school is a high-risk population. Our building is quite old and creative ideas are a must to pull off the lessons we need to keep our students engaged in their learning.
The classroom is small and when we break into guided reading groups, I take 6 students with ADHD, auditory/visual perception, behavioral/emotional challenges out to the hallway at a table. This is not the place for these students to be engaged. Other students enter and pass in our sight. Noises from other rooms, doors, halls, are encroached upon us. We need peace and focus to engage these students. Reading orally is almost impossible, given the insurmountable challenges.
My hope is to have a portable cd station using highly engaging leveled texts. The students will be wearing headphones to block out the noises and they will increase their reading fluency by actively listening and following along. The quality of their lesson will be maximized and they will be able to respond to comprehension questions and pick up the skills of a fluent reader. Wow, this could be buried treasure for all of us to profit from. They will ask to have reading group extended. The materials will enhance their ability to focus and increase the amount of reading we can achieve each day. I can share this equipment with the other groups in the classroom as well for their social studies, science, and math content areas. Books on cd are endless opportunities for teachers. The cd player can also be used for the whole class to listen at one time. We've talked about this for several years but budget money has been cut in the district.
Your donation will push students to achieve higher reading goals. Disruptions will be cut to a minimum and students will be engaged in the fluent reading that should be theirs every day that they attend school. The number of students effected by this project is endless, as long as we respect and maintain the equipment with TLC. You can depend on that. Way to Go. We love you.
