My Students

We need motivation! E-books have proven to be the best motivator for non-readers in elementary school.

My students range from Pre-K through 5th grade.

The school is a Title 1 low income school. We are also the home school for all of the homeless students in the parish. The majority of our students are reading far below their grade level because they do not have the motivation to pick up books on their own and practice their reading skills. Many students, however, will sit and read for a very long time on an e-reader. They need the extra help that e-books can offer, such as the auditory capacity as well as the interactive features. Our school is also a school that incorporates French Immersion, so those students need access to French books on a regular basis to practice the skills they are learning in the classroom because they cannot practice them at home.

My Project

These Kindles will be used in teachers classrooms as motivational tools for the students. The teachers will use them as rewards for students who reach their individual goals for the week. They will also be used as learning centers in classrooms to help students that are below grade level in different content areas. They will be able to access the e-books that have been purchased by the library as well as the free books and educational apps that are available from Amazon. These students live in a technological world, so the best way to reach them is through technology. With the help of these Kindles, hopefully our students will be able to grow academically. They are still young, so if we can bring them up to their appropriate grade level now, they will be less likely to fail in higher grades and more likely to finish school.

Many of our students do not have access to technology at home, so it is up to our school to teach them 21st century skills.

Tablets and e-reading devices seem to be the way the world is heading, so to allow students the opportunity to learn the technology skills that they will need later in life as well as help them increase their academic skills is such an amazing opportunity. I cannot wait to see my students faces when they get to use these Kindles.
