I teach 6th grade English as a Second Language (ESL) in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My students are immigrant English language learners from all different countries around the world, such as Haiti, Mexico, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Panama.
One of their favorite things about school is making projects. The students love to engage their creativity and express their love of literature through art. Student projects are so important because they are different from your run-of-the-mill book reports and tests. Projects allow students to express themselves and their love of literature through a completely different means.
We have a book in our classroom library called "There's A Boy in the Girls' Bathroom," which sounds incredibly silly, but is an endearing book about a bully outsider who transforms himself through the help of a new student and a school guidance counselor and learns to love himself for who he is. My students adore this book, but we only have one copy.
I would like to have a class set of this book along with a teacher resource book that gives many different ideas for student projects based on the book. The resource book would help me so much in facilitating new and innovative student projects, and would help me give the students choices as to which project they would like to complete.
This would be an invaluable resource for my 6th graders for years and years to come. Please help me make this wish a reality for my sixth graders. We thank you for it!
