My Students
My students are an amazing bunch of children who come to school every day excited to learn. Most of them come from communities where sometimes the bare necessities are out of reach. My students need an inviting and engaging place to learn so that I can help them to raise their academic success. Unfortunately, our school is in the lowest 5% of all California schools in academics and attendance. I want my students to be motivated to come to school and to foster a love of learning before it's too late. As a teacher, I have to do everything I can to ensure that I remove any obstacles they have on their journey to success.
My Project
We want to cook the foods in class that go along with our unit on cultures from around the world. These materials will allow me to make learning more interactive and fun by allowing my students to prepare dishes from around the world to support our unit on cultural diversity. Food helps connect people and encourages my students to open their minds to other cultures. Now, more than ever we need to encourage students to be open-minded and learning and appreciating the customs, traditions, and dishes from other cultures will allow us to do that! We also want to make studying for tests and supporting our learning goals more fun with the use of gaming in the classroom. I have found that giving students the opportunity to earn gameplay, and also turning our favorite childhood games into learning opportunities keeps my students motivated and invested in learning.
