This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from many diverse and academically under-served backgrounds often not represented in literature. Students should be able to see themselves in the characters they read about and connect to them on a racial, cultural, and modern level. They also deserve a safe place in the classroom where they can go to calm down or a comfy place where they can go to read a book.

My amazing students are working on becoming great readers and writers, but they need lots of teacher guidance and support.

My students come from many diverse backgrounds, often with English as their second language. Our school is centered in a low socio-economically disadvantaged neighborhood where parents often work two or three jobs. Given the language barriers and long work hours, many students struggle to find assistance for homework which makes reading and writing assignments difficult at home. As their teacher, I need to make sure every instructional minute counts.

My Project

Have you ever tried to relax on a tiled floor? Or, tipped your chair so far back that you fell backwards in the middle of class? Well, my students and their growing, fidgety bodies need space to spread out and get comfy! These uncomfortable distractions during quiet independent work time can be managed through special seating arrangements within the classroom.

My students need flexible seating options during hard to focus times.

Several of my students have a difficult time concentrating during independent reading and writing. With your donations, my classroom can have an additional Hokki Stool for those students who need extra support concentrating on their work, while still allowing their fidgety bodies to move in one place.

In addition to the stool, my readers need a comfy space to dig deep into their reading books, engage in thoughtful book club conversations, and have an additional meeting place for group work. A small extra carpet would be a great addition to my book nook area of our classroom. The comfy, fold out, floor chairs would give the added comfort to sitting on the tiled floor when the carpet space is in use. My students just want to get away from their desk and get comfy.
