Let’s Get Charged Up About Science! Bringing Static Electricity to Life

My Project

We’re hoping to bring a Van de Graaff generator into our STEM lab — a classic and unforgettable tool for exploring electricity, static charge, and the forces that make our hair stand on end!

With a Van de Graaff generator, students can safely see invisible electric forces in action.

We’ll explore how static electricity moves, experiment with metal spheres, balloons, and sparks, and even create mini lightning demonstrations during our annual science fair.

This project will help my students understand key science concepts like energy transfer, electric fields, and circuits — all while inspiring future engineers and scientists.

I teach over 550 curious and creative students in grades K–4 at our elementary STEM lab. Every week, I get to watch their eyes light up as they experiment, build, and discover how the world around them works. My students are full of questions, imagination, and energy — and they love hands-on learning that makes science come alive!

Many of my students don’t have access to science tools or experiments outside of school, so our STEM lab is often their first chance to see, touch, and experience real science.
