My Students

I teach science and writing to a group of diverse fourth-grade students who come from low-income families, most living in the city housing project across the street from the school. My students come to school eager, energetic and willing to work hard at their studies.

I am constantly impressed with their resilience and desire to learn, despite the many challenges they face at home.

This is the first year my school is departmentalizing across the fourth grade, meaning I will be teaching my subjects to 80 students divided into three classes. There is a broad range of students in this mix: general education students, English language learners, and special education students with learning disabilities and/or behavioral issues.

Unfortunately, my school, despite getting federal aid as a Title I institution, cannot fund even the most basic supplies, nor can many of the students afford them.

My Project

This year we are implementing a new Science program that engages students through the medium with which they are most comfortable -- digital apps. These apps are designed by academics but are visually exciting and can show students simulated images of things they cannot see, such as electricity or wind power or a million years of erosion in a desert canyon.

These kids hunger for knowledge and they have a voracious appetite for apps!

The problem here is that I have 3 classes of 25 students each but I have only 5 laptops. Assigning 5 children to a single laptop to explore an app in each class negates the purpose of interactive learning. But with 7 additional tablets, I could cut the ratio down to 2:1, which is at least reasonable.
