Let's Get a Handle on Math! Hands-on Tools for Learning
My students need math supplies and manipulatives to support their learning in the classroom. They need large magnetic math tools as well as student sized tools to increase their understanding of mathematical concepts in daily learning.
I work in an urban school district with amazing students who have a love and passion for learning.
My students are such bright and intelligent thinkers, and I learn something new from them every single day!
They are so willing to overcome any obstacle that might stand in their way. I see myself as a young student in so many of them. And let me tell you, my kids love to learn. School is their escape; a place they can get away from it all and just be a kid. Their desire to be at school and get an education is so strong. I strive to provide them with experiences that they might not otherwise have, as well as provide them with resources they might not otherwise have access to or can afford. My school is a very positive upbeat place, filled with children grades K-5 who have a hunger to achieve greatness. I truly do love my job and love my kids, because there's not a day that goes by I don't feel I made a difference.
My Project
My kindergarten students are getting their very first experiences with math and they need manipulatives! For students learning math to be able to truly grasp a concept, they need experience with hands-on tools before being introduced to pictorial and abstract concepts. They also need to be able to see a teacher model how to use these manipulatives.
These materials will not simply make life easier for us in kindergarten; they are greatly needed for the conceptual understanding of the building blocks of math content knowledge.
These math related materials will be used in multiple ways each and every day in our classroom! The large magnetic manipulatives such as the Learning Resources pattern blocks, base ten, number bonds, ten-frames, tangrams, and money can be used by the teacher to model for students how to use each tool, as well as be used by the students to explain their thinking to the class. The individual manipulatives such as the Melissa and Doug pattern blocks, Manipulite Geo-Solids, Count and Link game, ETA Hand2Mind ten frames, ten frame activity dice, Snap and Slide Number Bonds, and Rekenreks will be used in every day activities such as math centers and will be kept in individual math tool kits for each of my students.
