Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are seventh and eighth graders who are eager to learn pre-algebra and know how very important mathematics knowledge is in today's workplace. They attend the largest K-8 school in our state. Most speak two languages, the first of which is not English. Many are new to this country and are struggling academically and economically. Despite these challenges, they are eager to learn and have their eye on getting into a good high school.
Most of my students start the year well below their expected grade level.
This means that they must learn new material while also filling many gaps that really should have been mastered in previous grades. This represents a huge challenge for students and teachers. Many of our students work hard and know that math skills and knowledge are their tickets to a bright future. For students who are also struggling to learn English, math is one subject that they can still usually excel at, more than say, language arts. This is why math is a favorite subject for many of my students.
My Project
My four math classes need essential supplies to gear up for another great year in 2018/2019. This year students will get creative by writing in their interactive math notebooks each day. Interactive notebooks are a great hands-on tool that allows students to really engage in the content of the process of learning pre-algebra. Typically the right side of the notebook is teacher guided note taking, often in the form of a graphic organizer, foldable, or cut and paste. The left side of the notebook is where students are able to process the information through practice and diagrams.
In order to make these interactive notebooks a daily practice, I am requesting composition books, glue sticks, and cardstock.
These materials allow students to use different colors which add interest and engagement to note-taking. Also, this is going to benefit the English Language Learners. They will get hands-on experience with the vocabulary and feedback from both peers and the teacher.
Additionally, I am requesting 2 pencil sharpeners. As you can imagine, pencil sharpeners are required in any math classroom. Students need to use pencils so they can rework math problems as needed. Having over 100 students cycle through each day puts a lot of wear and tear on our sharpeners.
With your help, our students will be able to begin next year fully supplied and ready to learn!
