This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 22 enthusiastic and curious first graders in Oakland, California. They are growing in their learning each day, despite many of them reading below grade level. Most of my students are English learners and have only had formal schooling in English since Kindergarten.

My students are eager learners, and have already made so much growth since the beginning of the school year.

Students often use flexible seating when they are doing their assignments and projects. Almost all of lessons and read-alouds happen on our classroom rug. However, our old rug is not large enough to give each student sufficient personal space.

My Project

Every morning, we gather together in a circle to greet each other, play games, and set a positive tone for the rest of the day. Our class meets together multiple times throughout the day to learn about a new reading strategy, a new math concept, lessons about Ancient Egypt, and so much more. Together, again, we end the day with appreciations in a circle on the rug.

We are in need of a new rug with spaces that are large enough so that students can focus on their learning, and not worried about their personal space.

Having a new rug to replace our old, crowded one will make a world of difference to my students. Students will be able to feel confident and capable when they are able to sit and focus on the learning at hand.
