I work at an urban school in the city of Rochester. Our city is one of the most segregated in the nation, and not surprisingly, we have one of the highest rates of child poverty. Our children are amazing though and often thrive against the odds in our expeditionary learning environment.
Our school specializes in helping students study real world issues and we create our own curriculum with social justice themes.
We love to study the world around us using reading, writing, science and social studies all unified in one theme that we focus on for months at a time. Students come alive as they get out of the classroom into the real world, interact with other adults and people, learn through hands on experiences, and create purposeful end products to be shared and for the benefit of others.
My Project
1st graders are just starting to sound out words and read! With our school model currently 100% remote, it's hard to get books into their hands.
A digital subscription of the magazine "Let's Find Out" would be a very fun interactive way for us to read about real life events and stories that are highly engaging.
Parents are also doing a monthly pick up of supplies and could get the print copies as well for their children.
Children love magazines with their bright pictures, simple captions and easy reading sentences just at their level. Thanks for supporting this gift to my classroom!
