Students in my classroom come from low-income families in Chinatown, Manhattan of NY. My classroom is an ICT class with a mix of English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities. My students all have different learning needs and academic levels that it becomes difficult when it comes to planning activities for them to work individually on or collaborate in small groups.
Elementary school years are very important where a strong foundation should be implemented for these students.
My students' small accomplishments mean the world to them; it helps them boost their self-confidence and self-esteem.
My Project
I've been teaching computer science in my classroom since 2017 and would like to learn other ways to keep my students engaged! In the Pathfinders Winter Institute, I will be able to gain the knowledge necessary to bring Robotics back to my classroom for when we return to in-person learning. As it is an emerging technology, having a fundamental understanding of Robotics and other physical computing topics will greatly benefit my students as they think about potential careers for their future.
With the Pathfinders Winter Institute: Junior Botball Challenge, I will be able to bring technical knowledge, as well as important life skills, to my students.
Botball is an educational Robotics program that educates students on the systems involved with Robotics while also encouraging teamwork and interpersonal skills. Upon completing the course, the curriculum and kit would be mailed to my school and I would be able to use it year after year!
