Lets Do Labs in Class!

My students need science lab kits, like 2 natural selection labs, 4 kidney function kits, and a DVD on Galapagos, so we can create a more hands-on educational experience.

My Students

Hello everyone. I am a NY high school biology. My classes are generally composed of freshman and sophomore students, many of whom, when they first come to me, seem to have lost that childhood curiosity for the world around them that was, at one time, so insatiable!!

Science is a hands on discipline, students learn best when they complete and write about activities or experiments that they conduct themselves!

Unfortunately, funding for supplies for over 30 biology classes is beyond the financial capabilities of our school. During labs classes, when students should ideally being doing activities, students usually complete paper labs that simulate the real deal. So it is up to the individual teacher to find fun ways to stimulate our students' minds and get them excited about the topics we are learning.

My Project

And so, I have chosen hands on activities that will help my students to learn about the units of evolution and excretion. All of the necessary materials for the activities are in the kits. The students will create a model of the kidney that will simulate the cleaning of the blood. They will then be able to test the urine and diagnose any health issues. In the evolution kits, after we watch about Darwin’s visit to the Galapagos Islands the students will complete activities that simulate the famous peppered moth experiments in England that depicted natural selection in action!

Science can be a difficult subject, full of an almost entirely new language of scary words and concepts that seem so far removed from a teenager's daily life.

I know that if I can get them excited about coming to class; if I can make them curious about what is coming next, then the battle is already half won! Even more important, these group based, hands on activities prepare students for the types of experiences that they will have in college and beyond! I just need your help to succeed.
