This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are highly motivated to learn through the manipulation of hands-on resources. These materials will support the developmental understanding of mathematical concepts (counting, sorting, strategizing, weighing, number sense, fractions, etc.) while building language (attributes, vocabulary, qualitative and quantity concepts, etc.) and thinking skills. I have selected items that correspond to themes already being addressed within my classroom environment such as the "apple" manipulatives correspond to both my September theme and Farm theme. I look forward to having students utilize these resources during math and language lessons to enhance their comprehension skills and make connections between these skills and real-world events. For example, providing apple fraction manipulatives allows students to understand how a whole can be divided into parts and make a connection to following recipes. The claw arcade game serves as not only an unusual incentive for task management but strategizing how to maneuver the claw successfully in limited trials which involves logical thinking, predicting, and probability. The popcorn machine is also an incentive and correlates to counting, volume/capacity and estimating. The telephone provides numerous interactive activities involving mathematics such as number recognition, number recall, and number order, as well as a replica of a real-world item utilizing numbers. The wonderful and relevant idea behind these hand-selected items is to think "out of the box" when implementing academic lessons.
