Let's Come to Our Senses! We Need Sensory Supports

Help me give my students different types of fidgets, weighted lap pals and sensory items in our room and break space that will help teach them critical self-regulations skills that focus on managing their social-emotional needs.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We have many scholars at our school who either experience a lack of sensory needs or are overstimulated by sensory input. This impedes their academic learning because their main focus is controlling their stimulation and emotion. Some of the tools I'm trying to provide in my new classroom to increase scholar focus are the following: fidget toys, weighted sensory lap pals, and sensory supplies to help students manage their emotional needs if they need to take a break.

Our scholars are more engaged with their work when their sensory needs are met, which can range from holding and squishing a sensory toy in a break area to using weighted lap pals during work time in their small groups.

All of our brains function differently; therefore, we all have unique learning styles, which includes visual, auditory, and/or kinesthetic learning. Understanding my students' unique learning style helps me know their strengths and also their limitations. By utilizing a variety of sensory items, I will be able to strengthen our scholars' learning style and increase their academic knowledge in the learning environment.

All in all, each scholar is unique, different, and has specific needs, and I hope to teach them how to use certain tools to help meet those needs.

I have high expectations for our scholars in the learning environment and hold them accountable for their learning, but I also design the learning experience by providing the tools for their academic success. By providing our students with a wide range of sensory supports that help teach students self-regulation skills such as how to interact with others, regulate their feelings, and build tolerance for each other’s feelings, just think about how successful our students will be not only in school, but also at home.
