Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergartners come from many backgrounds with varying educational experiences. My kindergarten class is made up of 26 diverse 5 & 6-year-olds in a southern Arizona urban Title I STEAM (science, technology, engineer, art, math) school. Ninety-nine percent of the students receive free or reduced-price lunches.
The student population in my class is composed of English Language Learners (ELLs) of Hispanic, Burmese, Nepalese, Arabic and African descent, and many are refugees.
The majority of these students are from low-income households, living in neighborhood apartments and trailer parks. My parents have limited or no understanding of coding and sequential programming to provide their children the opportunities offered on-line.My parents do not have the money to provide them with technology such as iPads, computers, and more. The reality is that these technological devices do not exist in their homes.
Kindergarten is no longer just for social and emotional development. My students spend their day doing activities to prepare them to think, problem solve, and succeed in our future world. They need time for critical thinking "exploration" at school. It's important that they have classroom opportunities to explore coding problems with technology
My Project
The 12.9 in. iPad Pro, with the protective case, will give my students opportunities to explore amazing current and future technology. The educational coding apps that will be download will encourage excitement, not just for the technology, but also for the reading, engineering, and math learning associated with it. Students will implement command codes forward, backwards, right turn, left turn when playing coding games they have programmed on the iPad. Having an iPad Pro will also help my students learn to keyboard.
Coding is a complex topic.
Early coding experiences promote critical thinking. This iPad will help students grow their technological interests to fulfill 80% of future job positions using coding technology and engineering skills. It will help students stay engaged and focused in learning activities. By accessing technology, students will gain conceptual practice in critical thinking and problem solving using math, science, and reading when coding programs and games to practice their technology skills.
The large flat surface of this iPad Pro provides coding opportunities that are not available with a laptop or desktop computer. For example, our Ozobot robots will be able to read and roll across the larger flat iPad surface area to follow the color combination lines drawn using an app. Students will have access to on-line coding websites and be able to download programs onto this device. The touch screen illuminates the need for a mouse. Please help my students get this device for our classroom.
