The day after I graduated from college, I moved across the country to teach English to a class of 4th grade students living in Dallas, TX. A place where 66% of the population live at or below the poverty line, and the poverty rate has recently increased by 42%. In Dallas, only 13% of students are graduating college ready, forcing them to become victims of the vicious cycle of systemic poverty.
These children are told by the entire world that they can’t succeed, because their intersectional identities are barriers to their success.
But, what if we started teaching these children that these labels don’t define them? What if we were able to intentionally create classroom libraries that our children can actually relate to? What if they read stories that made them feel empowered and taught them to reject societal expectations? What if we started teaching these children that they are capable of anything they set their minds to? What if these efforts made our children finally believe that they are believed in? What if that changed our whole world to be accepting and encouraging of all people?
What if that change started with critical literacy in my 4th grade classroom?
These books will empower my students to think critically about our world, our impact on the future, and they will teach them to celebrate difference. By funding this classroom library, you will be providing literature for us to read together and discuss each week during our morning meeting.
These books will make a life long impact on my students' understanding of themselves and our world!
As a first year teacher, my classroom library and available funding are extremely limited right now, so any donation means the world to me. We can't thank you enough for considering donating to our classroom!
