During our recent unit on matter, the new notebooks became lab journals for recording predictions and observations during a hands-on experiment, and having enough supplies for everyone meant no one was sharing or sitting out. The pencil pouches were the surprise hit—several students told me it was the first time they had their own supplies that stayed at their desk—and there was a real buzz when I handed out the notebooks and highlighters. One student asked, \"These are ours to keep?\" and that moment stuck with me. Next, we're moving into fractions, where students will use their notebooks and index cards to build a personal math toolkit of models and strategies they can reference all year. In science, we're starting a unit where they'll design and document their own simple investigations, and the lab journals and folders will help them keep their work organized from question to conclusion.
