This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Serving your community is a way to bring learning to life.

My 9th-grade students chose Mental Health as one of the units they want to explore. Today, with everything they have already been through, it is imperative that they understand the importance of breaking the stigma about mental illness. Students are learning to be Upstanders and to help each other and others feel welcome and encouraged both inside and outside of the virtual classroom.

My students have a range of disabilities including autism, learning disabilities, visual impairments, cognitive impairments. They know what it feels like to be afraid, anxious, and alone. Learning through this pandemic hasn't been easy for anyone. This project will provide the opportunity to get students the materials they need to support their own and other's mental and emotional health.

My school is located in a large urban city. Of the 3,100 students 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learners status, or disabilities hinder their academic or social-emotional

My Project

Students will collaborate to plan stress-free days to encourage friendship. They will make slime, stress balls, and art to use to encourage safe ways to release stress. They will plan brain break opportunities for our class as well as their other classes.

Though this will occur virtually, students will still have the impact of collaboration, teamwork, laughter, and leadership as they teach each other skills to reduce stress.

Students will create protocols for students to use games, stress-reducing art, or stress balls at times when they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed out. Students will learn organizational skills as they plan for classroom break activities and teach each other about mental health and strategies to reduce stress. Students will learn the skills of following directions and safety while making the slime and stress balls. Snacks will also be provided to add to the fun. Finally, students will learn about teamwork as they encourage each other when they play board games or participate in respectful competition.
