Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 30 amazing students. I have been fortunate to work with many of them for the last 3 years. Our school is located in Santa Ana, California, with students primarily from low income households. My students come from all walks of life, and many are English learners with very limited educational resources outside of the classroom.
Our school mission is to provide personalized learning to each and every child who walks through our gate.
My students in particular have varying interests and abilities. That being said, they are ALL supportive of one another. They are the most respectful, empathetic, and caring group of kiddos for whom I have had the privilege of facilitating learning.
My Project
This Diary of a Wimpy Kid book set will encourage and motivate my students to read more each day. We currently have three very well used Diary of a Wimpy Kid books in the classroom. I have a list about 13 names long of the students who would like to have the rights to take one of the books home next. I have seen this series bring my students together inside the classroom and know that having access to the whole series would bring the students even closer as more of them would be able to sit, discuss, and share their passion for reading this series together.
Our public library is not a place that most of our parents feels safe taking their children.
The library has a very large population of homeless who live around the facility. Families get harassed for money, and the children are witness to drug paraphernalia. Therefore, the students truly count on our classroom library to supply them with reading options. This series would get me one step closer to fulfilling that expectation by not having to send those thirteen students on that list home to wait for another day.
