Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is one in which students spend a great amount of the school day reading for a variety of purposes: for fun, for their research projects, for their book clubs, or to learn about the topics that interest them and are passionate about.

They also spend a great amount of time on sharing their ideas and feelings about their readings.

My students enjoy learning about new topics such as historical events, rocks and minerals, artists, new ways of solving a math problem, etc. They enjoy learning in cooperative groups, being able to help each other, give each other feedback on an idea, and agree/disagree on ideas. People can live without SUVs, jet travel, and numerous other luxuries. But no life, human or otherwise, can survive without our most precious natural resource: WATER. I want my students to understand this idea, in order for them to be able to educate others about this. We live in a state that has been affected by weather changes and droughts. Though my students have seen commercials, have heard others talk about the drought we are going through and how saving water is so important, they don't really internalize the idea and understand how serious this is.

My Project

First,I want my students to learn about the topic by being exposed to literature about the topic (since I know how passionate they are about reading). This is why I am requesting the books:Earth & Environment Theme Book Library, Properties of Earth Book Library, Can Kids Save the Earth?, Earth's Ecosystem, Drought And Heat Wave Alert!, Droughts, Heat Hazard: Droughts, and KIDS DISCOVER. I will also show videos about this topic to my students and expose them to articles. Next,I will use the book Environmental Art for Kids for my students who learn through art. The book offers a creative variety of art projects that develop an awareness of the environment and encourage a caring attitude towards the earth. I will also use the Elementary Science Instant Learning Center - Water Cycle to immerse my students in the water cycle. Then,I will use the book Do-It-Yourself Sustainable Water Projects: Collect, Store, Purify, and Drill for Water for project ideas my students can work on cooperatively.

Finally, their culminating project (which will also connect to the new common core standards) will be to write a persuasive essay and create posters that will be displayed around the school to persuade our school and their families to conserve water.

My students will be able to "teach for the planet" by thinking of how to adjust their behavior to conserve water.
