My Students

Imagine watching a Friday night football game, but without the stadium lights on. Interesting isn't it? That is what it is like for our marching band on our practice field during our evening rehearsals. Once the sun goes down we hope the students really know what they are doing.

I teach high school band (grades 9-12) in a rural, yet suburban school district.

Our free and reduced lunch rate is around 50% here at the high school and higher in some of the elementary's. Some of my students have never left the state of Missouri and others take vacations each summer to a new place. My students are hard working, motivated, driven, compassionate, and talented. They understand that financially we are at a disadvantage from area districts; yet they do no let that take away from what they want to do.

My Project

Currently our practice field we use during marching band has no outdoor lighting. Occasionally we are allowed to practice on our stadium field, but it is a natural grass field so we cannot be on it every time we have an evening rehearsal. Once the sun goes down, we practice in the dark--sometimes up to an hour. These lights will allow us to continue our rehearsal and have a productive last hour. We can continue learning drill, cleaning drill and making our show the best it can be.

Marching band is a unique activity in the fact that not only must you be at your best, but the people around you must be their best as well or the group will not succeed.

When you add a variable you cannot control (sunlight), the "team" can become unfocused and the group does not succeed. These lights help us control this variable and help keep each person accountable to the next.
