My Students
"Children are made readers on the laps of their parents."
--Emilie Buchwald.
I can teach my class the sounds letters make and how to combine those sounds to make words, but the real learning will come in the practice they do everyday at home with their parents or caregivers.
The kids in my class have hard-working parents who hold down multiple jobs with long hours to assure their kids have food on the table and a roof over their heads.
Although these parents want to help their kids achieve success, books for kids to read are not, understandably, always the priority. To help the kids become stronger readers, part of their homework each night is to read at home with a parent, grandparent, older brother or sister, or caregiver. Most families make the time to read with their little ones, but when they do they realize they have very few level-appropriate, interesting books for the kids to read. Often parents come to me asking if they may borrow books from my little classroom library. I'm more than happy to oblige, but my supply is limited also. I want to provide inexpensive, age and level appropriate books in a variety of genres for families to take home and use for an extended period of time.
My Project
I have obtained a subscription to an educational website that makes available literally hundreds of fiction and non-fiction leveled reading books. With this subscription I am authorized to download and print an unlimited amount of books for my students' personal use. I will be able to print inexpensive books for my class to take home and read with their families to fulfill their daily reading requirement for homework, and the kids won't be limited to the same two or three books every night! I anticipate lending to the families in my class an average of 30-40 books each week. But I need an efficient printer and quality ink to print these books.
Research indicates that children who do not reach grade-level reading scores by third grade are in danger of never attaining the strong reading skills needed to achieve success in school.
Help me help the kids in my class get a solid reading foundation in kindergarten by giving access to hundreds of books for families to read together every day.
