I have much work to do!
19 awesome second graders are counting on me to make sure they can comprehend and calculate by May . . . My situation is perilous since half are English language learners - they need someone to read to them in English every day.
Technology will help me help them!!
Let me introduce you to my class: they are a group of 19 diverse, loving, creative 7 year old's who enjoy school and LOVE learning.
In my classroom I have SIX students who speak Arabic, THREE who speak Spanish, TWO speak Turkish, ONE speaks French, ONE speaks Urdu, the rest are English speakers. Due to the diversity of languages spoken in my classroom, 12 of my students are significantly below grade level and need extra support in the classroom. I believe this iPad will provide a much needed resource. It is a proven fact that one key of success is being read to - My students need to be hearing and reading along in ENGLISH. Many of their parents are simply not able to provide this valuable learning tool.
My school allows me the flexibility to teach my students in the way that best suits the students. I love my school but being a public Charter School funding is limited for supplies like this.
My Project
Students in my class will be able to use different apps to work on phonics, comprehension, and math skills that will get them back on grade level and give them a fighting chance to be the creative and loving people I know they can be.
My students need time. They need time to sit and work with a program or a person who will guide them visually though the steps of learning and also read to them. My school can not hire any more teachers or specialists so I am looking for ways to give these students more focused time in areas where they need this type of support. An iPad resource can give these students the support they need and act as a guide to help them progress through the necessary levels from pre-reading to reading sufficiency..
This project will make a difference in the lives of my students because it will give them a tool to learn on their own.
I am a good teacher who strives to do what is best for my students. I can not give this many students the one on one attention they each desire and also need every day.
This iPad is a beginning for my classroom and will be an extension of me as I am able employ technology to guide the students to their own understanding and success.
