I believe a teacher must give regard to sight, sound, smell, and kinesthetic movement in a classroom for intentional active learning to take place! I am looking for ways to engage students in ways they least expect. To do this I need both hands-on learning tools as well as objects of interest.
Creating a sensory experience for students is beneficial for their mental, emotional, and physical learning aptitude.
I believe supplying yoga balls as alternate seating for my middle schoolers with extra wiggles would be a great way to channel their focus and purpose to learn. I would love to use the human skull as a motivational "spooky" writing prompt for both informational and fictional literature. Who wouldn't be inspired to "direct" the room while "presenting" their most recent writer's piece from the director's chair? Having a parachute and double dutch rope set to drill vocabulary and facts would be a dream come true! The idea of having students write a narrative piece about going to the beach while playing ocean waves from my sound machine sounds so incredible. How much more is an opinion paper on the work ethic of one of earth's smallest creatures, the ANT, while you've been watching the ant work daily in your class room all year.
Students are submersed in both academic and entertaining digital content from the time they get up until the go to bed. Please help me provide resources that they can awaken their senses in such a way that learning becomes an actual real life experience and not just monotonous digital documents. Please help me bring this type of sensory learning to my classroom. This list is small in the grand scheme of things but I believe each item will make a HUGE impact!
