This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is something that I learned in the years I've been working at this school: each of my students is different, but they all share the same joy and willingness to have fun and learn in the music class.

In my school, there is an heterogenous group of students from United States, Latin America, Africa and Middle East.

The music class is the place where all those cultures join together to perform a variety of songs that involve every one of them. I am really excited to learn from them as well!

We are a Title I school, with low income families. There are kids who don't speak English or have even been to school before. They deserve a quality education and enrichment experiences that help them grow and get ready for real life.

My Project

I try to provide my students with a wide variety of experiences: from PreKinder to 5th grade we are always trying something new! We use different materials as instruments: cardboard boxes, spoons, paper...and we would love to use buckets as well!

With a world full of technology, we sometimes forget how concrete experiences are important for kids.

The voice is the oldest instrument, but there are many others around us and we never realized that they were there. The first time I taught them to play songs with spoons whey couldn't believe we were making music with them. They ask me every day to play them! I happened the same to me when I first saw a group of students making music with painting buckets! And this is were I want to take my students to: a new and long-lasting experience.

Getting real drums is much more expensive, and something we cannot afford. For me, it's more important that they learn that music is everywhere, made with simple materials and daily life objects. Using these drums will make them connect with their own culture; appreciate what they have and develop their creativity. How? Providing them with experiences that can share with their peers and their families; making them enjoy what they do with something as simple as a painting bucket.
