I am a fifth grade math teacher in an elementary school in Rocky Mount, North Carolina with a very low socioeconomic student population. I teach 25 students who have a very hard time working in collaborative groups. A lot of them do not possess the social skills to work together. This is why I feel that math games will enable my students not only to learn much needed math skills that will prepare them for the North Carolina End of Grade Testing but will also help them learn to cooperate with one another. One of the skills we focus on in our school is character education. We want our students to be able to learn from one another as well as learn sportsmanship, responsibility, and the art of winning or accepting defeat graciously. Any classroom is a much better learning environment when students are willing to work together instead of arguing and bickering all of the time. Through the use of math games I feel very sure that my students will learn a lot academically as well as socially.
