Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
They warm my heart. These little, and some not so little, students of mine are the epitome of a challenge. They challenge me to teacher better, work harder and expose this gigantic world to them so that they may gain a better understanding of it. I teach in a title one school, which means that there is a high percentage of children from low-income families. They come from all over the world; Bangladesh, India, Mexico, China, Honduras, etc. My classroom is a melting pot of different cultures. They are all eager to learn and are always ready to devour anything new.
My students are my extended family; always asking questions and in the process, we educate one another, the benefits goes both ways.
Most days they greet me with a smile, and they hardly ever complain, which always amazes me. I honestly could not ask for better students.
My Project
My class is located next to an extremely busy highway and at times it can be difficult to hear the lesson being taught. Some of my students are hearing impaired and although we have a sign language interpreter, the FM system that I wear picks up the unnecessary noise. I and my students have to constantly repeat ourselves and at times it can be frustrating. Sometimes my students just give up and say "never mind". There are also times when I have to stop the class and wait several precious minutes until the outside noise dies down. The loud horns, trucks and sirens are intrusive sounds that are out of our control , however having a microphone and a speakers would be a tremendous help. With a microphone and speakers communication between myself and the students would increase, frustration levels would decrease and all of us would be quite content.
