My Students

When working mathematics problems in an advanced class, it often becomes redundant to have to repeat the same process on the board in front of the class. The projector will allow students to display what has already been done on their paper and save time.

My students are from a blue collar community with many families needing them to work to help support the nuclear and sometimes extended family.

The school has an extended AP (Advanced Placement) program, of which my students belong since I teach the Pre-AP Geometry and our AP Calculus. These students are college bound, but are in need of assistance and support in any way we can give it to them. A large part of learning mathematics is being able to communicate and share. These students find it difficult to come forward if they need to write and speak what they have accomplished individually or in small groups. Using technology gives them an excitement about sharing and greater potential for growth in more areas than just mathematics. Being from a rural area, we want our students to have the same benefits as the larger cities and feel confident about their abilities as they move forward with their educational endeavors.

My Project

In an honors mathematics course, we go through material and examples quickly. Students are expected to share and explain their reasoning. Using the document projector, the students will be able to project the work they have already created on their own paper instead of taking, and wasting, time reworking the problem on the board. The students will be able to demonstrate the problem from their work immediately. As a teacher, it will be easier to evaluate what the student has done. The document projector can be used in every class year after year with every level of student in the same way. Problems can be started on paper and continued the next day from the same point instead of re-written on the board after having been erased the day before from each class. The document camera is a time-saver and a way to help students with their presentation abilities. communication in mathematics is also important!

Students will be more productive in the mathematics classroom and also have the opportunity to work on their communications skills.

Since they will be presenting their own work, they will need to be more concise and legible in their work. In the end, they will be able to understand their own work and notes more readily. A document camera will allow all students easier access to information and communication to the mathematics they need to learn.
