My Students

How much more culturally authentic would it be for my performing arts students to use actual Latin American instruments while practicing and performing our songs and dances? The challenge that my rural students face is that they are rarely ever exposed to musical culture from around the world.

My students live in a very rural part of Washington state where the closest town of any size is an hour away.

Because of this and the extreme poverty level in our area, parents are not able to take them to movies, let alone cultural events. Through my Integrated Arts program I am trying to expose them in every way that I can to World music and customs. We are learning songs and dances from different countries and we are planning to have a large folk dance festival. I would like to incorporate students playing these instruments at the rehearsals and performances to give it all a more authentic feel. The school where I teach is a K-12 all located in one building. Many of these students have grown up here and will be with the same small group of kids their entire school career. Our typical graduating class size is 15 students. Because of this, we have an unusual opportunity to really get to know our students and their families.

My Project

I just got this new teaching position, Integrated Arts, in a small rural K-12 school. My mission is to expose these children to music, dance and drama from our country and from countries all over the world. The children will be learning a lot of songs, games, dances, etc. from cultures all over the world and will be performing for small groups and then at a large folk dance festival. In order for the children to get as close to "the real thing" as possible, I am using recorded music and would like to incorporate some authentic percussion instruments into the rehearsals and performances. My students are very secluded from cultural opportunities that other children may be able to be a part of because of the poverty in our rural community. Parents just aren't able to drive their children hours away, let alone pay for the event. These instruments would be fun, engaging and would add so much to their experiences. All 68 students would have the opportunity to use these on a weekly basis

This donation would make a tremendous impact on our multi-cultural music/dance program by giving all 68 of my students many opportunities to play the instruments and to perform using them.

Adding these instruments to our songs and dances would truly give them an authentic taste of another culture. This is a program that I will continue from year to year so they would get used daily for years to come.
