This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all special education students in high school. Most students come from low-income households and have struggled in school for years. My science classes provide students with hands-on experiences that they can take with them even after they graduate.

My Project

Creating and adding to our garden will help students learn important life science skills in a hands-on way. Just being in a garden and around plants has mental health benefits. The rain barrel will help students learn about water collection possibilities. It will also help student have an easier way to access water rather then going back and forth inside the building.

We need opportunities to decompress from our stressful experiences.

We will plant and grow with the seeds and soil while protecting them and rotating them with the containers. They will learn about food sovereignty and sustainability while applying their gardening skills. Creating a garden will offer students social and emotional learning, including managing stress and promoting mindfulness.

The planters, and seeds will be used by students to build a beautiful garden for our school that promotes social and emotional enrichment. Our world has changed so much and this garden project is designed to enhance learning while promoting social-emotional learning, healing, and community.
