Let It Grow:Hydroponics

My students need hydroponic kits to explore, design and build a sustainable garden in their classrooms. This will enhance their knowledge of our plant science unit.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

As is the case in most urban school districts in New York City, my students are eager to engage in all hands-on science activities. Limited budgets limit the access to the kinds of exciting material necessary to introduce cutting edge STEM activities for all students.

"We Believe We Will Achieve!" is a motto our students know well.

The students are always excited for new experiences and lessons they know their teachers try to bring to the classroom each and every day. We may be small but we think big. Each new year the children I see are committed to bringing the best out of me, in trying to engage them with the best science experiences we can bring to our "Science Lab." Although limited in budget, we scavenge, beg and borrow the necessary materials to maintain the quality of engagement in STEM activities the children need and deserve. These activities provide my students with the means to think about the world outside of their communities. How they can be a part of building a new future and a better world for us all. My young scientists look forward to all the new opportunities this world has to offer.

My Project

Working as a scientist in the field of botany and plant science, my students will be able to use their skills to create a mini-farming community in their very own classrooms. This field work in agriculture, inside their own classrooms, will allow them to engage in a hands project that teaches them an alternative to producing healthy foods in an ever-shrinking planting environment. Ideally, this type of experience, will allow the children to complete a long term project that will yield visual results, sustainable throughout the school year, in a field of science that, up until recently, has been limited to a bean seed in a baggie. These desk top hydroponics kits that are available through Carolina Scientific Materials Catalog will allow us to begin our "field work" in hydroponics.

This project is an exciting opportunity to introduce my students to a different way of thinking about our planet and its limited resources.

This amazing opportunity for them will engage them in ways not possible through the system and constraints that exists in our school system today. STEM or STEAM activities assure a place for these children in a field growing rapidly.
