My Project

My third graders and so many other children have had a very unusual elementary school experience. Students missed out on field trips and learning experiences and exhibited social and emotional needs that have never been seen on this scale before. Gardening has proven to be something my students love to do. Students plant, tend, and harvest herbs, flowers, and vegetables. We have had the pleasure of helping to create a school garden that has genuinely become an outdoor, hands-on learning space.

Many students around the school use the learning garden to quiet their minds and calm their hearts.

I have loved seeing how resilient my students are. I have loved hearing their gratitude for school experiences that they are now beginning to experience for the first time due to school closing. Not only will a tower garden assist in their social-emotional growth, but it will help expand their scientific knowledge on how to grow and produce their food. The lessons will empower them to understand that food can come from somewhere closer to the grocery store.
