My students need a variety of flower and vegetable seeds, mini greenhouse growing kits, soil pots, soil and books to teach my students how to grow plants and to compare and contrast how different plants grow.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are energetic, fun-loving, eager second graders who look forward to coming to school everyday. My students face many challenges such as disabilities, lack of supplies and language barriers because their native tongue is not English. Despite these challenges, they are eager and ready to learn.
Everyday, I strive to meet their various needs in any way that I can.
I try to create an engaging and peaceful work environment so their minds can soar! By making sure they have what they need to be academically successful, safe, healthy and secure, I am helping them to be as productive as possible.
My students live in a low-income, inner-city neighborhood and they have struggles at home. It is my job to make sure they are able to accomplish what they wish to in school. One of my goals, as a teacher, is to provide things that my children are lacking and to create a positive learning environment. My students love to experience new things and visit new places such as the many field trips that I take them on. I also try to keep their bellies full and their minds open to learning new things.
My Project
Every year, I like to do hands-on activities with my students to help them learn about different science ideas such as plants. I like having our own plant nursery so that my students can see how seeds come in different sizes, shapes and colors. I think that by seeing these differences, they will have an easier time understanding that plants grow differently and look different. We will be planting a variety of vegetable seeds to observe the differences and write in their plant journals.
I am also asking for flower seeds to see how they grow and to give to their moms for Mother's Day presents.
I let them choose which flowers they want to grow and they watch the plants as they grow. We will wrap the plants up for them to take home to their moms and plant in their gardens.
I am asking for ziplock bags and paper towels to do a plant experiment. We will place bean seeds in the bags and put a wet paper towel at the bottom of the bag. We will hang the bags up on the windows so that the plants have direct sunlight. As the plants grow, we will complete our plant observation journals where we will detail how they look and how big they are growing. This is a fun experiment that I like doing every year with my students.
