My Students

I’m a first year teacher to approximately 150 high school students taking an Intensive Reading and/or English class.

I hope to instill a love of reading by providing students with a variety of texts in the classroom, a place to store reading material, and an inviting space to entice students to read independently.

I provide students with “choice reading” time each week. Many students, however, do not have access to books or magazines. I have a small classroom library, but many of the texts are not relatable to high school students. Our school does not have a media center or library, so the texts in my classroom could be the only printed material students see.

My Project

I’d like to lead my students in a novel study around The Great Gatsby.

Our class set of the novel is lacking; we have 22 books and 32 students per class.

I’d like each student to have a copy of the book in class, with a few extra for students who would like to continue reading at home.

I’d also benefit from resources to ensure I’m including the most relevant content in my instruction and engaging my students in activities that will leave a lasting impression. As a first year teacher, resources will help me increase the rigor of my lessons and prepare students for college level work.
