My students need posters, cork board, signs, tableclothes, and a menu sign to update the decor of our 1960s-era middle-school kitchen.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade Home Economics students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language.
You wouldn't know it from looking at them, but many have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their young lives.
After school, most either go home to babysit younger siblings at home or attend after-school care until 5 or 6. For young teens, this high amount of responsibility at home can sometimes result in extra exuberance while at school. Although some of them forget to focus on academics, most of our students are terrific, goal-setting scholars who might very well be the first in their families to attend college!
My Project
Our Home Economics kitchen is really shaping up. During our first year, we've added new small appliances, new cookware and utensils, a pantry full of food, and much more. Even though our program is really coming together beautifully, our classroom is still ugly and out of date. Instead of the dingy, decade-old items stuck on our walls, I envision food, nutritional, and safety posters, hand washing signs, bright and cheerful tablecloths, a cork board wall for rotating bulletin boards, and a neon menu sign for menus and instructions.
These decorative touches would make our classroom next-level fierce and amazing.
Of course, our school budget doesn't have money for these items, so our only hope of reducing our eyesore is getting your help!
