This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

When I visited my local library over the summer, I was intrigued that they had recently created a lovely StoryWalk outside, along a path near the library. It is a short walk where the pages of a picture book are arranged sequentially on signage so that families may walk along and read and enjoy the story together.

A StoryWalk is the perfect addition to the new playground area at our school!

With the new beautiful playground, I noticed that many families are arriving a bit early or staying after dismissal to socialize while their children play. I realized that this would be a wonderful opportunity to encourage reading and family interaction that promotes literacy. The yard signs and books that I have selected will enable me to make this a reality by using the books, yard signs and clips to assemble the StoryWalk. In addition, I recently facilitated the 101 students at my school applying for city library cards and I hope that by having a StoryWalk, these families may be inspired to bring their children to the local libraries to use those new library cards!
