Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students belonging to the learning community I serve are mostly black, indigenous, and people of color who come from working families living on the margins financially. A good number of them are immigrants whose parents work as contracted employees (without the guaranteed protections afforded to conventional employees). Over 75% of students receive free and reduced-price meals. Their families have limited resources for the fun stuff (like toys, camps, sporting experiences, etc...), let alone technology for personal use and learning. COVID has presented a particular challenge to this community.

My Project

While we’re engaged in distance learning, the books will be used as part of our weekly lessons building on social-emotional competencies, focused particularly on positive identity development and growth mindset.

In addition to the books I’m requesting, I hope to create a lending library of learning toys that can be checked out by students and families during COVID and beyond.

Students who may struggle with traditional learning opportunities often thrive with self-directed hands-on learning, growing their sense of competency and flexibility in thinking. I intend to maintain and grow this lending library for the purpose of promoting positive identity development and a growth mindset. Thank you for your support!
