What child doesn't love being read a story? Unfortunately for the children in the neighborhood where I teach, the opportunity to be read a story is a rare occurrence.
In the neighborhood where my school is located, poverty, drugs and gangs are the realities my students face. Their home lives are often chaotic and education loses its importance. Many of our parents are substance abusers and those that aren't often work long hours just to meet the basic needs of their families. Whatever the reason may be, one thing is clear, very few of our children come to school with the rich literacy experiences that set the stage for future learning.
In my 3rd grade classroom, literacy stations are a daily part of our reading block. During this time, I meet with my reading groups to give students the one-one-one instruction that they need. The other students are engaged in various literacy activities around the classroom. One of the stations my students love the most is the listening station. It is in this corner of the classroom that my students can make up for lost time and sit back and enjoy a story while someone else does the reading. Right now I have a limited amount of audio books for my students to enjoy, but with your help, I would like to be able to change that. I am asking for several different audio books, mainly non-fiction so that my students can expand their knowledge of their world around them. Besides being a relaxing activity, listening to recorded stories shows students a model of fluent reading, boosts their listening comprehension, and exposes them to new ideas that we can't always cover during the regular school day.
By helping to fund this project, you will ensure that my students' love for reading continues to grow and that our listening station stays fresh all year long!
