My Students

Henry Ward Beecher once said that "Books are not made for furniture, but there is nothing else that so beautifully furnishes a house." Help us to beautifully furnish our classroom library with new and contemporary books!

My students are NYC public school students who attend a Title 1 school.

The majority of the students qualify for free or discounted lunches. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and homes, but we come together to learn daily. For many of our students, they will be the first to graduate from high school and are living out the American Dream for their families. Our school is a small and tight-knit family. We have less than 500 students in the entire school but we have plenty of school pride and lots of heart.

My Project

Only seven years old, funds at our new school are often tight and updating our libraries can often fall to the wayside. Independent reading is often critical for our students who struggle with reading the most. These students often read three to five years behind their tenth grade reading level. During the 2010-2011 school year, our goal is to reads at least two levels beyond their current reading level. This is only possible if students are reading constantly. To encourage these skills, I try to jazz up our library with contemporary and interesting literature. These books range from urban literature that mirrors their own lives, to sports for the Mets and Yankees fans, to the latest graphic novel. My goal is to find the book that caters to the various interests in my classroom.

Your donation means that each one of my students can find the beauty and power in literature.

My hope is that they will come to see that reading, can indeed, be for them. Amidst the chaos and harried NYC life, I want them to find beauty, calm, and solace in the books of our classroom library.
