My Students

Our library media center serves children in kindergarten through 6th grade with a variety of learning needs. Forty-three percent of the students are of color (Asian, Hispanic, and Black). Over 54% of the students come from low income families, and may be unfamiliar with MakerSpace activities. The library staff knows these fun MakerEducation activities will create opportunities to put books in students' hands.

MakerSpaces attract students to the library, engage them in the learning process, extend the literary experience, challenge the students, and provide opportunities for creating and problem-solving.

My Project

Purchasing baseplates and LEGOs makes it possible for my students to have an engaging maker education program in our library during and after school. Students will gain the following educational benefits: promote fine motor skills; encourage teamwork; increase creativity; develop problem-solving and mathematical thinking; improve communication skills; develop persistence; improve self-esteem; and develop lateral thinking and planning skills.

LEGOs to Go will help build a sense of community.

A boy scout from an area troop is constructing the LEGO wall for his Eagle Scout project. There are countless success stories of having a permanent LEGO wall in classrooms or libraries, but none involving a portable one. Our portable wall makes it easy to move from the library to classrooms, upstairs and downstairs via an elevator, yet mobile enough to transport to the gym or auditorium for school-wide events like maker fairs, movie nights, sock hops, book fairs, concerts, sporting events, etc.
