Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work in a Title I school in Northern Utah with a high ESL population, including many newcomers. My students are wonderful! They are curious and love to learn; but my students and their families are also highly impacted by poverty and many other challenges. The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will be used for multiple purposes in my classroom.
I strive to create a comfortable, organized, and pleasant classroom--a classroom that inspires wonder and community and where students want to be!
Many of the supplies that I've requested will help to organize student supplies and learning materials and help to make our classroom more comfortable and create community and form relationships. For example, I send a personalized birthday card and small gift in the mail for each child's birthday.
My students need to learn to collaborate and practice conversations. They enjoy being able to choose a place to sit around the room to work. The portable lap desks will be used with the floor cushions that we already have. Clip boards and folders will make it easy for students to stay organized as they move around the room or tranisition to new activities. Dry erase boards are used daily in our classroom. Fun learning items include Pop Its for both Addition and Multiplication Fluency and Phonics small groups.
I have decided to use Legos this year as an exciting earned incentive in our classroom store. Students can earn pieces throughout the year as they achieve goals to create their own small personal sets--like a desk pet! I am so excited about this idea. I've done desk pets for several years and the students have loved them. This adds a STEM element to desk pets, and who doesn't love Legos!
