Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a middle school in a large city. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and supper. My students are amazing and eager learners, and I want to help them become successful, happy adults.

Most of my students are from the local area.

They have chosen to follow a marine science and environmental studies pathway for their middle school years. English is a second language for many of them. Their parents encourage them to learn as much as they can while supporting the teachers any way they can.

My Project

Engineering is a component of the "Next Generation" science standards. Basic physics such as motion and force are also standards that my students need to master. Starting with the LEGO classic bricks, my students will learn to build basic structures and shapes. For instance, they will build a square box, then an oval or sphere. They will then move on to the Building kits and work at modifying them. I have included LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Friends Building Kits to engage both the male and female students. To preserve the kits, prevent loss of pieces, and make them easier to store, they will be stored in the Stack & Pull clear plastic boxes.

To try to make what we do resemble real-world situations, I want their projects to be something they are familiar with and see frequently.

All my students have used LEGOs. Asking them to build a Speeder or Mission Vehicle out of these kits increases their interest, their understanding, and their retention.
