Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a STEAM teacher of students in grades 3-5. As an elementary STEAM teacher, I have the opportunity to spark creative passions and expose my students to a variety of educational opportunities that will prepare them for the future.
My school is a Title I school, with the majority of students coming from low-income homes.
Because of this, many of the students don’t have access to technology and creative materials at home. My hope is that I can expose them to unique educational experiences that not only ignite their motivation for learning but also help them develop a passion for creating and inventing as well as preparing them for the future with in-demand skills.
My Project
In my classroom, we use design thinking and the engineering design process to come up with creative solutions to problems. Students define their problem and then brainstorm solutions. Students then bring their ideas to life by creating a prototype of their solution. This part of the process is not just a student favorite; it's also a teacher favorite. I love getting to see the creativity of my students and the collaboration brought forth by these processes.
As a STEAM teacher, I am always encouraging my students to get ideas out of their heads and into the world for others to see.
With over 300 students, however, using consumables, such as cardboard, paper, and other recyclables, to create prototypes of their ideas can be costly and harmful to the environment. LEGOs would allow my students to bring their ideas to life, show others and then take them apart for others to use. Additionally, LEGOs are manipulative so my students could easily make improvements to their designs without having to waste materials. LEGOs would help my students get to be the engineers, creators, and designers they love being without having to worry about a shortage of materials!
